Head Lifeguard Success profile 2025

Prerequisites and Function: 

1-3 years of prior lifeguarding experience is required prior to applying for this position. Must have a Current Lifeguard Certification at the time of start date. Current CPR, AED and First Aid certification via American Red Cross.

Please indicate whether or not you have a WSI or similar swim program certification. Please note that Woodledge is also hiring swim instructors and assistant swim coaches for the 2025 season. Applicants can apply for instructor and lifeguard positions and can be offered one, both or none.

Lifeguards are employed by Woodledge to provide water water safety services, first aid, and maintain some aspects of the grounds. Lifeguards also help to build a sense of community through interactions with members, participating in events, etc. The primary function of the lifeguard is to ensure rules of the pool and deck are followed at all times and to prevent accidents and provide immediate assistance should a swimmer need help. This assistance may come in the form of CPR, water rescues, medical event response, AED needs, first aid, etc. Head Lifeguard is an exemplary role model for all junior staff, leading when necessary. 

Reporting Structure: 

All Lifeguards report directly to the Operations Manager. The Operations Manager is currently an open position. Should a board member witness behavior needing immediate adjustment or praise, that feedback should also be provided directly to the operations manager. The Head Lifeguard does not have direct reports but will lead projects and day to day activities. 

As a member of the Woodledge Staff, a Head Lifeguard must

  • Be aware of all pool rules and promote water safety at all times and support all fellow lifeguards with this task. 
  • Adhere to and enforce all club rules and bylaws consistently and support all fellow lifeguards with this task. 
  • Greet Members and maintain a safe and inclusive environment for members and guests.
  • Enforce guest policies for the use of the facilities by nonmembers. 
  • Wear Woodledge approved uniform at all times, This includes lifeguard swimsuit. There are no exceptions. Guards out of uniform will be sent home.
  • Remain extremely attentive to water when in the chair. 
  • Lead the biweekly emergency water response drills with fellow head guards to ensure readiness of lifeguard staff and document all drills in pool log. Have 1-2 different members to participate in each response drill hosted. 
  • Please note, where there are no swimmers in the pool but people on the pool deck, one lifeguard must remain on the concrete slab pool deck and in a guard chair to quickly respond should a child or other person need immediate assistance.  
  • Oversee and participate in the completion of daily maintenance tasks which may include cleaning pool, cleaning skimmer baskets, checking chemicals, cleaning bathrooms, picking up trash, emptying trash, opening umbrellas and putting umbrellas away, replenishment of supplies, ordering supplies and items for the snack shack. 
  • Head Guard or employee who has been working at Woodedge the longest should have a two way radio to communicate with Tennis Staff should first aid or medical emergency at tennis courts require assistance. 
  • Attend pre-season team meetings and or training (paid)

Scheduling and Work Hours:

  • The Woodledge Season begins May 23rd, 2025, the Friday before Memorial Day weekend and closes at the end of Labor day, September 1st, 2025.
  • In the first two weeks of the season, Woodledge is open on weekday afternoons and all day during the weekends. The day after the last day of school (pending snow days) marks the first full day Woodledge is open during the week. From that day to close at the end of the season, Woodledge is open for full days. 
  • Full Time employees typically work 20-25 hours a week while part time employees typically work 12-18 hours a week. All overtime is subject to club approval. 
  • Hours may vary based on weather, performance and other factors. 
  • Employees can take no more than seven (7) days off during the season unless otherwise agreed to in advance with the Woodledge Club President. 
  • Woodledge Lifeguards follow a rotational schedule. The rotation allows guards to guard the pool, interact with guests and maintain the pool deck, bath houses and pavilion. Depending on the length of shift, a guard may have one or two 15 minute paid breaks and have a clocked out 30 minute lunch break. 

Compensation: 

  • New lifeguards will be compensated at Minimum wage. Those who have previously been lifeguards or lifeguards at Woodledge in the past may be compensated at a higher rate based on a variety of factors. 
  • Full Time and Part Time Hourly employees are eligible for August Awards. Members vote for the lifeguards who exhibit exemplary leadership and safety qualities throughout the summer. The two guards with the most votes will receive $250 each. 
  • Woodledge provides weekly snacks to lifeguards and swim instructors. These snacks are stored in the first aid closet between the two bathrooms. Snacks will be replenished weekly. 
  • Swim Instructors and Lifeguards receive a complimentary membership for themselves. 

In addition to lifeguarding staff will be asked to: move tables, chairs, clean grills, empty trash, lead activities, crafts, and work during events and burger nights. 

Terms of Employment and Employee Code of Conduct: 

  • This is a seasonal position, the term of employment is from May 1st through September 1st 2025.
  • Ensure that your teammates are attentive, respectful and responsible, and communicate.  Voice any concerns to the Operations Manager if you do not feel comfortable communicating with your peers. 
  • Must arrive 10 minutes early for each shift worked, compensation will be provided for that time.
  • Act appropriately with and interact with adult members and their children. Children view Swim instructors and coaches as role models. Appropriate behavior is required.
  • Do not whip towels, hit or put hands on one another or members. Children view Swim instructors and coaches as role models. Appropriate behavior is required.
  • Act with maturity and professionalism.
  • Act politely and courteously.
  • Not smoking on pool grounds as it is prohibited.
  • Refrain from loud and offensive conversations.  This includes foul language used at any time while on club grounds.
  • Get to know the families, foster a family friendly fun pool environment.
  • Follow the instructions of the operations manager and in cases when the operations manager and Swim Lesson Programming Director or Swim Coaches.
  • Find an approved substitute If there is a conflict with the work schedule.
  • Cell phones should only be used when on break or in the case of emergencies. 
  • Seven or more days requested off during the employment period must be approved by the Club President. 

The following process has been implemented to ensure adherence to the staff code of conduct: 

  • First offense will result in a verbal warning by the Operations Manager.
  • Second offense will be a written warning
  • Third offense will be a final written warning
  • Fourth offense will result in termination.

Please note that each warning may also result in an employee being sent home for that shift.

Consuming or being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and/or using inappropriate language or putting hands on one anyone on club property are grounds for immediate dismissal.

You may cease your employment at any time and for any reason by notifying the operations manager in writing that you wish to end your employment. Please give at least one week’s notice. You are an employee at will. The club may also terminate your employment at any time for any reason by the discretion of the Board of Directors and/or Operations Manager.
